MZGS I – 1960s

WEEK 5 – the canon

What is the Canon? Why is it important? Do we need a canon? Or do we need a different one?

WEEK 6 – 1960s – THE BEATLES

THE BEATLES WERE IN MANY WAYS THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE 1960s. THEY KIND OF SHAPED THE MUSICAL UNIVERSE OF THE DECADE AND ALLE THE OTHER MUSICIANS FOLLOWED THEM. WHEN POP MUSIC BECAME ART AND MORE THAN JUST ENTERTAINMENT AHLFWAY THROUGH THE 1960s. AND: THERE IS NO ROCKBAND WHERE SO MUCH IS WRITTEN ABOUT. THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF BOOKS AND MAGAZINE ARTICLES.

Great analyses of all Beatle-songs (click on pic for link)

INTERMEZZO : METAL

HEAVY METAL EVOLVED OUT OF 1970s HARD ROCK [BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, AC/DC]. FIRST INCARNATION WAS N.W.O.B.H.M. – NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL [IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST] WITH A HARDER, LESS BLUESY SOUND. ALL UK UP TILL THEN.
THAT CHANGES WHEN AMERICAN KIDS TRIED TO OUTDO THE BRITISH. AND THEY CAME UP WITH TRASH METAL [METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX] WITH AN EVEN MORE DISTORTED SOUND AND POLITICALLY ORIENTED LYRICS. DEATH METAL WAS A EVOLUTION INTO DARKER TERRITORY. SONGS LIKE HORROS MOVIES, FULL OF BLOOD AND GORE AND DEATH. MORE TECHNICAL IN PLAYING AND OF COURSE THE GRUNTING SINGING STYLE. WHERE TRASH BECAME MORE MAINSTREAM IN THE 1990s THANKS TO ‘THE BLACK ALBUM’ OF METALLICA, DEATH METAL IS TOO EXTREME AND STAYS UNDERGROUND.
LOTS OF DIFFERENT SUBGENRES: POWER METAL, HAIR METAL, BLACK METAL, FUNK METAL, GRINDCORE, NU METAL, DOOM METAL, CHRISTIAN METAL, METALCORE, MATHMETAL ETC. ETC. ALSO LOTS OF HYBRID FORMS AND GENRES.
